You'll get an email with a link. When you click the link, you'll be logged in and your new password will be displayed.

Note that you cannot choose your own password. I know that a lot of people don't like that, but "it's for your own good" as they say.

The problem is that some people would use their banking password as their patrick.net password. Then if someone manages to hack this site, get in the database, and un-hash the passwords, those people who used their banking password would be fucked, and I'd be partly to blame.

The only way to prevent that for sure is for me to assign random passwords. Sorry for the difficulty, but I made the passwords pretty short, and you can always log in with the "forgot password" link as long as you can get at your email.

When they try to escape, the door handles inject them with roofies.

I really appreciate people's efforts to help. Seriously, it's nice and the kind of thing that keeps me doing this.

The current problem is that the Letsencrypt bot (which is free) insists on upgrading certain packages every time it runs (like libssl-dev libssl1.0.0 libffi-dev libffi5 openssl) but the apt-get mechanism for upgrading those just refuses to run because my OS is no longer supported. If I upgrade my OS, I risk blowing the whole thing up and being offline for days or even a week. I have learned through long and painful experience that the safest route by far is to never upgrade anything unless I have a specific known critical problem which can be fixed only by an upgrade.

But that got me thinking a number of dark thoughts:

1. The Letsencrypt bot demands to run as root on my server, letting them do whatever the fuck they want. This is super-bad for security, though it is ironically in the name of security. Makes me suspect that the whole Letsencrypt organization is a front for the NSA to get root on a bazillion web servers. It's definitely not outside the realm of possibility.

2. The forced OS upgrade shit also essentially turns over my site to yet another organization, Debian. They could also do whatever the fuck they want.

3. The identification provided by SSL is simply an affirmation that "yes, this site is known to the corporate globalist cabal and allowed by them, for now, as long as it's not really a threat to our masters."

So why should I trust two external organizations and become part of the globalist problem, just to get the little green lock icon? I really don't like being dependent on and subject to the questionable integrity of third parties. OK, my ISP necessarily has control over my server as well, but I'd really like to limit it to just that.

So currently, I'm studying ways to do encryption of at least the cookie such that even if it were stolen in transit it could not be used by anyone else. Hashing it with the origin IP might be sufficient.

Thing is, there is no built-in javascript hashing mechanism, so I'd have to send down some code to the browser to do the hashing, and that code could be altered in transit. It's unlikely, but could happen. Trying to think of ways around that.

Summary: I just don't want to be dependent on extra third parties like Letsencrypt and Debian, especially because they are likely infested with extremely intolerant Democrats who would be happy to squash a site like this.

Military is also a pretty big part of GDP. Government alone puts a trillion a year just into these two. Majority CFO's are calling for last quarter 2021 as earliest possible recession. U.S. is a big economy, it doesn't turn on a dime.

Not sure any modern economic model is one to brag up, they have a tendency to booms & busts, and run on mostly .. debt.
