In reality, he got the contract to supply DOS to IBM PC's through his mother's connections and then systematically used that operating system monopoly to prevent the free market from working. He gave away software to kill Netscape, Lotus 123, Wordstar, and on and on, until he owned all of it. He was also able to use control over the operating system to prevent those programs from working as well as his own clones.

Bill Gates set all of technology back by at least one decade, maybe two, by killing off innovative competitors in that same manner. In the end, no VC would fund anything that competed with Windows.

There are two ways to achieve wealth:

1. create something useful better or cheaper than competitors in a free market
2. prevent the free market from working and simply extract "economic rent" at the expense of the whole economy

To be fair, he really did it by price. Remember, Mac and Amiga were strong competitors that Gates did not control. When Window 3.1 came out, Mac and Amiga prices fell by over half. The success of Windows was because it was much cheaper and "good enough." Windows also killed Silicon Graphics by being able to do similar work at a tenth of the cost.
