The State of Texas has some really good facilities for Veterans. We (DAV) put on events for the residents.

Elliemae: I have just purchased this book and look forward to reading it, but after I paid with paypal I didn't receive a link to the ebook. Can you help?
I'd buy the book but by the time I am able to use the information, I will be too senile.
Or two or three
i would not be surprised!!! as your targeted audience tend to have Alzheimer!!!
I am so sorry, ML! That just sucks that she remained in pain all night.
I had a reviewer write that my book is a bit "negative." YUP. For reasons such as this above

i’d rather die first than be put up in a nursing home. thank god none of our elders were ever subjected to the institutional, calculated abuse which has become the norm in AMERICAN nursing homes. health care for profit=oxymoron

Not all are rampant with abuse.
However, times have changed and now nursing homes are used for rehabilitation. So chances are that your insurance company will eventually send you to a nursing home that offers rehab services.
Even the places that are called "rehabs" are often nursing homes in disguise.
You should leave the $ in the patient trust fund - usually with the receptionist or the business office - and get a receipt. Nursing homes are notorious for losing money and clothing.
If you're not happy with the place you have the right to find another and have her transferred - as long as she has regular Medicare. If she has a medicare hmo, you might be stuck. To find a better rated nursing home go to the "nursing home compare" feature on Medicare.gov. Look at the overall ratings (as mentioned in the book).
Don't let them give you shit about the transfer and tell you that the doctor won't dictate a transfer summary for several days or weeks - that's total bullshit. They should be able to do it within a couple of days and it should be typed and back in the nursing home within 24 hours - but much faster if they call it in "stat."
If she stays put, I'd ask to meet with the Administrator. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that he/she isn't aware there was a problem with the medication or the money.
Good luck.
My brother and I have been haunting the place to be sure she's being well taken care of. They've already lost her bottom dentures and insisting it's not their fault.
Call the Ombudsman. Las Vegas, NV - 486-3545. File a complaint. They lost her dentures, they should replace them.
Hey - Mandy... how's your mom doing? Did they replace her teeth?
FYI, you have the right to choose a home health provider, rather than take the one they refer. If your mom has a primary doctor, ask him/her what company they use.
Hope it's all good.
You're very welcome. If you like the book, I'd appreciate your posting a review on Amazon.com. Every little bit helps!
I'm sorry that you had that experience and hope that, if there is a next time, things go smoother.

As promised, Patrick has posted my ebook - the Nursing Home Survival Guide - on his main page. It's a joint venture and I hope that each & every one of you buys one. Or two or three. hahahaha

Seriously, I included everything that I could think of that's relevent to NH placement. If you are older or your parents are, it's a good idea to understand how the system works rather than to find out the hard way.
