Paul has been trying to find common cause with evangelical Christian voters, who have been skeptical of and even hostile toward the energized libertarian element of the GOP.

â€œThe First Amendment says keep government out of religion. It doesnâ€™t say keep religion out of government,â€ he told a group of pastors at a private breakfast on Capitol Hill on March 26.

His tone was a signal, wrote David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network, that â€œthis is not some â€˜crazy libertarianâ€™ who wants to distance himself from faith-and-government issues.â€

The man is actually right. It's what one might call an "Inconvenient Truth" for the left.

Try actually reading the Constitution:

"no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...."

See also Jefferson's letter saying the Constitution (which he helped write) created "a Wall of Separation between church and state."

While Rep. Ron Paul's libertarian principles limited him to the House of Representatives, Rand Paul got to be a Senator by sacrificing those principles for expedience.
