The chart simply illustrates that about 50% of today's women are unwilling to committ while they still themselves have anything worth committing to. Anyone remember the 1990s, when one of the most repeated phrases of women was that "men are afraid of commitment". Even very young women used to say this. Have you heard this phrase lately? No? I know why. Men have wisened up, and if anyone uses that phrase again it will be thrown right back in their face. What the phrase really means was "Women are afraid of commitment, but will conveniently turn it around and blame men for it".
The above also illustrates the following general principle: If women as a group often make the statement A, there is a remarkably high probability that the truth really is one of the following:
not(A)
rotate(A,90deg)
reciprocal(A)
I'm sure the engineers in the crowd can decode that notation.

They still say that every time after zeroing in on a top 10% high status male with good looks.
Patrick, can you find a graph with information newer than 1990?
The graph is up-to-date. The 1990 key refers to the birth year of the women for that line. Women born in 1990 are now about 26 years old.

Keep in mind that 1990 means birth year 1990, so they cover women currently age 25-26 and up. Should be good enough.

Lucky you, Mell :). Just halfway joking :)
But joking aside, yes, I knew that. Women used to say that mostly to the 90% of men they would not make a sexual commitment to without endless labor and courtship.
Hilarious, a guy who has never had a long term relationship
Once again, you demonstrate that you don't know shit about my life. Just because you are jealous and obsessed with me does not mean you know anything about me or what I've done in life.
Furthermore, every statement I've made in this thread is confirmed by a multitude of scientific evidence, which you would know if you read any literature on evolutionary psychology or human sexual behavior. The field is mature and well published. Once again, your ignorance is surpassed only by your obvious jealousy. Yes, I'm smarter than you, wealthier than you, more attractive than you, have a bigger penis than you, and have a happier life than you. But it's not my fault that you are a loser. That's on you. Grow up and stop being a troll and maybe some day you'll make a friend.
Patrick, I also noticed that "You like this (1)" first showed up as "Like (1)". I had to click/reclick again to get "You like this (1)" properly.
The 1990 key refers to the birth year of the women for that line.
I would have never known that from looking at the graph, but Thanks for the clarification.
It's amazing how jealous piggy is of all the single men because we can get laid with beautiful women whereas he's stuck with a fat, ugly wife who cheats on him, and if he divorces, she'll take him to the cleaners. I mean, where will CIC live when she gets the cardboard box? And how will CIC make it on only half of his income from the NJ turnpike restroom glory holes he mans? Half a nickle is only two cents and a hay penny.
Well, I guess CIC is jerking off after successfully derailing another productive conversation by getting everyone to state, once again, how much of a loser he is. It's pretty sad that this is the highlight of his month.
Dan, stop ruining this thread with your goat-fucking-feud with Ironman. Jeez. This is a good thread. Don't ruin it. You know I like you, but stop being such a dweeb about Ironman. Just ignore him, for Pete's sake.
Addendum: It would help if you removed the stupid images. I don't want a goats ass in my face while trying to read up on a serious topic.
I would have never known that from looking at the graph, but Thanks for the clarification.
It wasn't in the key, but you might have figured it out be seeing where the blue lines end and the grey prediction zone begins for 1980 and 1990. That's how the rest of us figured it out :).
It's clear that less are getting married. There are two things going on. One is a delay in getting married, and this is due to many things. The other is that the asymptotic line is getting higher (larger percentage never marry). The story has not finished for the 1980 & 1990 cohorts, so we don't know how it will end. Part of the shift in asymtote might be by accident after years of putting off their future.
It's not clear if the overall trend of having less marriage is due to the unmarried option becoming more attractive or the married option getting less attractive. Online dating, acceptance of alternative lifestyles, and higher wealth makes being single more palatable these days than it would have in the past. Also, increased options for women in the workplace has made marriage less of a necessity for women. The thesis popular here is that it is caused by feminism setting up unrealistic expectations in women and a breakdown in trust among men due to a terrible deal for men in divorce court (again caused by feminism). I think it's more complicated than that.

I agree. But the legal part is a key factor even when considering the other reasons, which is the reason that some people emphasize it. For example, if as you say marriage is these days less of a necessity for women, then the often favorable financial dynamics (for women) of ending a marriage combine with this fact to make some marriages more fragile than they otherwise would be.
then the often favorable financial dynamics (for women) of ending a marriage combine with this fact to make some marriages more fragile than they otherwise would be.
This is true.
Another reason I forgot to mention about less people getting married is that it is much preferable financially to stay single, but cohabitate. If people make good money, they save on taxes. If they are poor, they qualify for more programs / incentives. The benefits of being married kick in when you are older and looking for health insurance and other benefits, like survivor social security. If my wife were less sentimental, we might not be officially married.
Haha, the extrapolations of the 1980 and 1990 curves are overly optimistic for marriage - why the kinks?
Half of my cousins in Europe have partners and children, but are not married. It's very common.
When I looked at the plot, I questioned the kinks in the predicted data, because none of the plotted data (1970 cohort and earlier) shows the kinks. I'm betting that the reason that they are predicting it is that they have plotted the data for the 1971-1979 cohort (not shown) through more years, and that they see a kink at 35. It does look weird though that they predict a kink the very moment that the data stops.
I get what she means by old fashioned, that's why I added the ":)".
But still, does every 26yo single woman must have been on the carousel?

Wrong emicon. You should have used winky. ;)

Sorry for loss, Dan. Lol

I've watched People's Court for 34 years and Judge Judy since 1996 or so--you see the same scenarios over and over to exhaustion. Just the other day, a lady, probably in her mid 40's was suing the man, about the same age, for money she had loaned him during their five year--are you ready for it--on again, off again relationship. He had lived in her house which was exclusively in her name, but had contributed a lot to the house during the years and didn't feel he owed her anything and by the way he'd bought her a salad sometime in the past. He was flabbergasted when Judy explained to him that when people play house and choose not to get married, courts aren't set up to divvy out who bought this or that (she used the example of the salad) as they would if he had been willing to make the commitment to marry and thus enjoy the benefits of the community property laws. He probably owns nothing at this stage of his life and was convinced he was getting the best end of the deal because he could cut and run at the least provocation. After Judy banged the gavel I could see him look around to someone with this can you believe what just happened expression on his face.

so it's on again
Marriage rates have been declining for decades
Marriage is just a piece of paper. It's the commitment that counts.
Moral failure on a massive scale, we are becoming a nation of sinners. The judgement day on all of us will be brutal and well earned.
We need God today more than ever
He didn't go anywhere, we as a nation walked away from Christs teachings. It's all our fault.
We need God today more than ever
Where did God go??
Moral failure on a massive scale, we are becoming a nation of sinners. The judgement day on all of us will be brutal and well earned.
But God loves all his creations, especially man. Children raised in a an ever increasing less Christian society do not know the sins they commit. This absolves an ever increasing segment of the population from that brutal judgement. The brutal judgment will be reserved for those who knew better, sinned themselves, and failed to devote their life to God and converting others to the proper ways.
It's open to interpretation. The Bible has said lots of conflicting things ... just like Trump. ;)

And the less we know, they more we are protected. Rejoice!
The hell we are building on earth isn't punishment enough for your kind? What's good about living in chaos, poverty, immoral hell? And forgiveness isn't automatic, none of us have it.

What's good about living in chaos,
Chaos mostly caused by God. Look at the Islamic world.
poverty
It's God's fault. He did not provide.
immoral hell
Which God decides what is immoral?

Well, replace the married # with number of children and my guess is you will see the same calamitous levels of successful reproduction.
Marriage or not.

Because, as we know, nature has fallen. Every natural impulse is a sin and a moral failure.
He didn't go anywhere
No? Just quit doing miracles? (apart from showing his face on toasted slices of bread of course)
