False causality

Calling it false doesn't actually falsify anything. After reading Obamneycare, I predicted on PatNet that it would cause Americans to die sooner and poorer. Partisan Democrats called me all sorts of names and made silly accusations. Then the numbers proved me right. I ask them for alternative explanations for the observable facts, and they have nothing.

Since Obamneycare hit with full force, medical spending and the mortality rate have increased and life expectancy has fallen, so Americans are dying sooner and poorer.

False causality is the hallmark of the Trump-era. "Believe me."

Yeah, that's pretty amazing. IT only took a few years of Obamacare to make people start dying sooner. IT couldn't be out of control obesity, bad diet, suicides, and alchohol and drug problems leading to the small down tick in American life expectancy.

81453   marcus   2017 Feb 28, 8:47pm

Hey, don't worry about it. A little fascism is just what the doctor ordered.

81454   curious2   2017 Feb 28, 8:49pm

People refusing to get vaccinated, even during a lethal flu epidemic that was killing children, might also have been a factor, but otherwise life expectancy should have increased due to fewer people smoking, along with other changes, e.g. warning about hydrogenated vegetable oil. Obamneycare drove dramatic increases in Oxycontin spending and opioid overdoses, for example, and diagnostic radiation of formerly healthy people. Toxic SSRI placebos have been shown to double suicidality especially in younger people, so infinite SSRI funding via Obamneycare might explain some of the 2%/yr increase in suicides during the period. (Frustration with the nonworking but mandatory website might have driven some people over the edge, too.) These are among the causal mechanisms by which Obamneycare causes people to die sooner than they would have otherwise. As for the spending, even the federal CMS projected the legislation would increase spending above prior law. You have to consider also what else could have been done with the money, as the same administration decided to "sequester" and reduce research money, after previously campaigning on doubling the NIH budget. Life expectancy ended flat for the five year period following enactment, the longest stagnation in many decades. You would need to look back to a war or plague to find a similar impact.

It's fascism wrapped in such a nice flag, being waved by a leader with such integrity.

When do we get start torturing again?

Remember everyone, just shout "they are coming right for us" and shoot first. MAGA!

81456   Patrick   2017 Feb 28, 9:00pm

Let's see...

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism.

OK, MAGA. That's pretty nationalistic.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights

Nope.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause

Illegal aliens should not be here. Terrorists should die before they can kill anyone. Not so much a unifying cause as threats.

4. Supremacy of the Military

Dunno about "supremacy" but they are going to get more funding.

5. Rampant Sexism

The only sexism we have these days is sexism against men.

6. Controlled Mass Media

Absolutely not controlled in any way. They are free to scream and they scream all day.

7. Obsession with National Security

Certainly needed, given the number of people that Bush and Obama have pissed off with their foreign policy.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined

No more than under Obama.

9. Corporate Power is Protected

I don't see any protection for corporations yet, but they do seem to be looking forward to corporate tax cuts.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed

Not at all.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts

What we have is just the opposite: distain *by* intellectuals for Trump.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment

Trump does have more of a focus on crime than Obama did.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption

That's the normal state of Congress. Certainly no worse under Trump so far than it was under Obama, and may get better.

14. Fraudulent Elections

Nope, was quite fair.

81457   Dan8267   2017 Feb 28, 9:08pm

And many more miscarriages. So all those "pro-life" Christians are hypocrites.

This is also a moral issue and one at which Christians utterly fail.

every Christian would be protesting in the streets every single day about big business vandalizing their god's creation.

Ahhh ... but lots of Xians believe humans are all special un-meltable snowflakes, God's chosen creature, made in his image, and the Earth is a gift for Human use. This is justification for the disregard to the natural environment. It's "ours" to do with as we please. God will provide all to the faithful, and when the great revealing takes place, the faithful will be rewarded.

Christianity is life denying, in that 'life' itself is transient and less important than the spiritual. A life affirming religion would take the opposite tac, and as you state, all things here on Earth would be considered precious.

We dont have anything close to traditional fascism here in the US. Cronyism is our problem.

4. Slavery
5. Apartheid
6. Child labor
7. Illegal immigrant labor
8. H1B Visas
9. Outsourcing

14. The Iraq War
15. The Afghanistan War
16. The War on Drugs

I like my Wife's Peruvian Tamales.
It has Pork, Chicken, Boiled egg slices, Kalamata Olive, a sliver of ají amarillo, and wrapped in Plantain leaf.
They are about the size of an iPhone 7 but an inch thick.
Not a fan of Mexican corn husk tamales. But I'm sure that's because being from the Eastcoast, I've only ever had some frozen simile of a Mexican tamale.
I'm sure somewhere out west, there's some Mexican gal that can make a bang up Mexican tamale like Ruth does.

Oh and I dump a crap load of Tabasco on them after I open up the banana leaf.

My mother's next to oldest brother and his wife lived at 4242 Sutro--we visited them in 1951 when their youngest daughter Margaret got married. Are you familiar with that area? I always wanted to see LA again.

The people in the picture literally simply switched political parties. Today's Republicans are yesterday's Dixiecrats. It's not the name of the political party that matters. The American South has always been evil because it's always been religious. It's improving as Christianity loses power, but the South won't be good until Christianity is dead regardless of which political party they control.

Trump and his circle of advisors, or those who oppose and attack him most actively.

Not much difference. It's two tribes of conservatives warring with each other. Let them weaken each other while liberals build a new political party either by reforming the DNC or breaking with the Democrats and destroying that party. The latter scenario is much harder, but it could happen. The new party would have to take over most Democratic seats in Congress first while letting the Republicans have the White House for years. Once the new party has the former Democratic seats, it could take the White House and the most of the remaining seats from the Republicans. Again, taking over the Democratic Party would be easier, but if that fails, we have a fallback plan.

Many of the war on poverty's programs — like Medicaid, Medicare, food stamps, Head Start, Job Corps, VISTA and Title I — are still in place today. The Nixon administration largely dismantled the OEO, distributing its functions to a variety of other federal agencies, and eventually the office was renamed in 1975 and then shuttered for good in 1981.

Why the war on poverty failed — and what to do now

http://www.heritage.org/poverty-and-inequality/report/the-war-poverty-after-50-years
The lack of progress in building self-sufficiency since the beginning of the War on Poverty 50 years ago is due in major part to the welfare system itself.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/louiswoodhill/2014/03/19/the-war-on-poverty-wasnt-a-failure-it-was-a-catastrophe/

Has the War on Poverty been a failure? Well, of course it has. If you devote 50 years and $21.5 trillion (in 4Q2013 dollars) to anything, and people are arguing about whether it was a success or a failure, then you can be sure that it was a failure.

The stated goal of the War on Poverty, as enunciated by Lyndon Johnson on January 8, 1964, was, “…not only to relieve the symptom of poverty, but to cure it and, above all, to prevent it.” Measured against this objective, the War on Poverty has not just been a failure, it has been a catastrophe. It was supposed to help America’s poor become self-sufficient, and it has made them dependent and dysfunctional.
