Anyone wants to risk a bet on the eventual number of sick people? Dead people?

I've heard it has spread much more than anyone knows through the 3rd world because there is no testing..

Looks like the world will be feeling China’s pain shortly.
I personally will be affected as my job depends on shipping from China.

I talked to a dad on the baseball team I coach last night, he said they are running out of inventory (auto parts) and their chinese factory has been shut down for two weeks.

Looks like the worst case scenario for economic disruption is in play.

Yet still another reason why we need to make everything in USA.

My company can't ship any hardware this month because our modems are built in China. We will probably miss our Q1 forecast due to this delay.

We are definitely re-thinking our supply chain plans.

Latest Study Suggests The New Coronavirus Is Also Spreading Via Feces. How bad will this spread in India and SF?

We already have Typhus, Hepatitis, and Leprosy.
182   Maga_Chaos_Monkey   2020 Feb 12, 4:55pm

Just jumped from 45k cases to 60k.
183   mell   2020 Feb 12, 5:00pm

The Chinamen owned up to the testing problem, but they simply labeled all pneumonias dxed via CT as CV cases to come closer to the real number of infections. Still this thing is overblown like nothing else. The majority of cases are so mild that we may indeed have more than we think and still the infection rates outside of Wuhan have been declining. While the supply chain problems are real, this is still a nothing-burger compared to the yearly influenza. I also suspect these "news" are used by short-sellers who have been desperately trying to bring the market down while getting their asses handed on a daily basis if you except the first few CV panic days. And that - while I do acknowledge there is quite some fluff in select stocks in this market - I don't support.

Publicly traded?

Short before the earnings call.

Just like cholera, the disease of the poor.
186   Heraclitusstudent   2020 Feb 12, 10:01pm

"Fatalities in Hubei climbed by 242, while the number of infections jumped by 14,840, sending the total number of cases in China toward 60,000."

"The number of officially diagnosed coronavirus cases in the Chinese province of Hubei surged by 45% to nearly 50,000 after the Hubei provincial government began adding cases that were confirmed via imaging scans, alongside those confirmed with the previous method of nucleic acid testing kits.

The abrupt spike reversed the declining growth trend of previous days. The Hubei national health commission said it would now start including cases confirmed by “clinical diagnosis,” which refers to using CT imaging scans to diagnose patients."
189   Eman   2020 Feb 14, 9:20pm

It’s naive to think the novel coronavirus was from eating bats or snakes or the sea food market like the Chinese government claimed.

“The CDC has been eager to help China in its efforts to fight this outbreak. Nearly six weeks after the CDC first offered to help China with the coronavirus outbreak, the offer still has not been accepted.”

China is hiding 💩. That’s why they don’t want outsiders to come in to help. They’re afraid people would know that they were making bioweapon, and it leaked out.

People should stop focusing on the number of deaths and instead look at how China has greatly reduced its greenhouse emissions.

I dunno, how much carbon and methane is produced by burning all those bodies?

Virus 1 - Humanity 0.

It also looks like the economic damage will go increasing. Airlines will be grounded in places. Factory and school closed. People quarantined at home.
203   Patrick   2020 Feb 24, 8:09am

Stock market is definitely ill with Corona virus.

This could be good in the long term, as people see the advantages of strong borders and local production.
204   Shaman   2020 Feb 24, 8:55am

Traffic at the port has slowed to a crawl. Factories remain shuttered in China. Companies over here are running out of inventory.
This could be a black swan event.

Should show that manufacturing some basic stuff should be a matter of national security. We should be making all of our own components, tools, and machinery.
206   Heraclitusstudent   2020 Feb 24, 10:51am

Apparently new cases are popping up in Italy or Japan and no one knows why, or what's the link with China.
Given this is the case, there may be millions infected, like, soon.
I'll venture a prediction: there will be cases popping up like this in the Bay Area within 2 weeks.

There were one or more patient zeros in Italy who traveled to China and likely brought it back. Parts of Italy are full of Chinese. They need to aggressively contain it now and it looks like that's what they're doing. The US has the big advantage of controlling all the ports of entry. I don't think it will spread here.

Word.

Imagine, if you will, an America with its own manufacturing capabilities, tens of millions of jobs, and independence from Middle East oil imports. That is the America of ⁦@realDonaldTrump⁩. The Democrat ”globalist” nightmare is dying before our eyes. https://t.co/VQfjaNOpSr

Trump will be a one term president if the economy tanks between now and November.

If the market tanks because of the Corona Virus - do you really think people are going to blame Trump who is trying to get a better handle on the borders and decouple us from China?

Depends why the economy tanks. If it tanks due to corona virus, I don't think many will hold him in blame for it.

At the end of the day, it’s the economy stupid. People don’t care why it goes up or how it tanks. The guy at the helm gets all credits and the blames. Of course, this is only one man’s opinion.

$20 says you are wrong and full blown hysterical panic is arriving shortly. If you are Asian, look asian, have an asian speaking accent or have been to asia recently - lay low and start packing.

What? Hasn't this been around since December? It's basically March and we're under 90K infected worldwide in 2-3 months, originating from a country with 1B plus people. We're talking 0.0000128% of the world has an infection. 0.00000037% overall have died. *All based off 7B world population.

If I was 6 months old or 85 I'd actually care. The market is reacting to China completely fucking up and what the reaction is going to be. The quarantines and supply chain disruption are real. The actual virus is a joke though. No one is going to care if you're Asian and think you have a "slightly" more fatal flu bug.
214   Heraclitusstudent   2020 Feb 24, 4:26pm

The current numbers mean nothing given the self-reinforced nature of contagion.
The question is: are we closely tracking every infected person and preventing new contagion?
The answer is no. In several countries there are people walking around who probably don't know they are infected. Thus they can take the subway or a plane, attend conferences, go to work, etc...
How many handshakes are there between you and a Chinese person in Hubei? Not that many.
You may say 1% death is a joke. 1% of 1 billion is 10 millions. And 1% can be your mother, or your kid, or you.
