Huh, I knew about Berlin being the Sodom of its day, but didn't know about interest. It does seem that Hitler had a good argument against paying interest on the German national debt, and this perhaps did really work wonders for the economy.

I think interest on the national debt is used to siphon off wealth from an economy, but the wealth has to be there to get siphoned off.
Germans are quite productive, so interest makes a difference there. But the Muslim world is not very productive, so interest probably doesn't make any difference there.

If you really want to get religious, the main Jewish religion along with its Christian and Islam sects all prohibit interest (rental of money). They also have a "jubilee," where all debts are forgiven at once every 7 years.
