Sure there is quite some truth in this, however the Muslims prohibit interest as well - could be wrong here - but aren't flourishing. Maybe now since the whole world adopted charging interest, simply banning it doesn't work anymore in a globalized world.

I think interest on the national debt is used to siphon off wealth from an economy, but the wealth has to be there to get siphoned off.

Germans are quite productive, so interest makes a difference there. But the Muslim world is not very productive, so interest probably doesn't make any difference there.

If you really want to get religious, the main Jewish religion along with its Christian and Islam sects all prohibit interest (rental of money). They also have a "jubilee," where all debts are forgiven at once every 7 years.
