At some point only the top 20% of people will work. They will do so for status and for the ability to buy luxury items. The rest will live on the Dole, scraping by in meaningless existence as their worthless lives pass them by. This unprecedented level of laziness will be made possible by automation perfection which negates the need for many workers. Also birth control will be stringent, those on the Dole will be limited to one child per womb. Any after that wont be provided for by the state.
Since idle hands are the devil's playground, crime will be rampant. The productive few will live behind walls and the rest will fight like rats in the vast tenement city that is America.

nah, you underestimate the power of the home entertainment complex as a pacifier.

The "dole" as you describe it costs less than locking someone up. Basically people will imprison themselves.

Work for work's sake sucks anyway. But automation isn't going to replace ALL jobs, there will still be a strong service sector, distributing the goods and making services for each other.

Few people understand the power of a service economy, how GDP can explode when service providers exchange services among each other ($100 of services can ping through the service economy hundreds of times).

It's only the rent-taps that slow down the service economy, the costs we incur on ground rent, legal fees, gov't taxes, energy costs, etc.

Can't agree with everthing but diagnosis of much of the problem is there.

So, the author of the article thinks that workers and former workers who pay included a pension plan are lazy scumbags like welfare recipients. Says a lot about the author.

Of course, if you want to get rid of government workers, cut military spending by 90%. Military spending makes up the majority of discretionary spending and it's the biggest government job program in the history of the entire world.
