@MolotovCocktail

Done.

@Patrick
Are the email notifications working? Mine seem to have stopped.
636   Patrick   2025 Oct 1, 12:18pm

Spamhaus is blocking patrick.net now, claiming that I'm a spammer, which I obviously am not.

I think someone reported it for political reasons.

You can all help by contacting them and telling them that patrick.net is not a spammer:

http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=137.184.228.18

I get this:

638   Patrick   2025 Oct 1, 12:29pm

Look at the URL. Spamhaus is so fucked up that they redirect you to an invalid url instead of http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=137.184.228.18

So after hitting then go back and put that url in again. Maybe that will help.

Mail from IP 137.184.228.18 was rejected due
to listing in Spamhaus SBL. For details please see
http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=137.184.228.18
639   Patrick   2025 Oct 1, 12:32pm

Or maybe just go to https://www.spamhaus.org/ and put in 137.184.228.18 or patrick.net
640   MolotovCocktail   2025 Oct 3, 2:15am

I am getting 429 errors a lot now.
641   Patrick   2025 Oct 3, 9:05am

@MolotovCocktail

Thanks for telling me. I set the rate limit to one request every 2 seconds instead of every 4 seconds. That should help. The server is no longer being attacked so it seems safe.

Attempting to amalgamate all the China threads.

Which is proving to be difficult to curate. I am trying to pick those about China generically vs those particular about something happening in/with China involving others.

Turns out not to be that cut & dry.

Here's a few I've picked of the former category or close to it.

https://patrick.net/post/1377770/2022-11-24-meanwhile-in-china

https://patrick.net/post/1323556/2019-03-30-china-s-plan-to-be-only-superpower-by

https://patrick.net/post/1384483/2025-05-07-fuck-china-thread

https://patrick.net/post/1379981/2023-08-20-china-s-economy-is-showing-signs-of

And this is the new master China thread:

@MolotovCocktail

I'm going to make a function for me to use to do this easily. Too much typing into the db otherwise. Maybe I can make that tonight.
645   Patrick   2025 Oct 7, 7:09pm

OK, done.

Wow! Lots of comments got merged. 1,446 for Globull Warming alone.
647   Patrick   2025 Oct 12, 2:32pm

Should I have "edit profile" and "logout" permanently on the page somewhere when you're logged in, or just leave it as it is where you need to click on your own name or icon to see them in the upper right?

I could have them both in the header, but maybe that's a bit crowded. Or in the footer.

Jut leave it as it is, please.

OK

All, I am looking for a new, down to earth email address. Any suggestions? I am giving up on Yahoo and Google emails - they are preventing access to my email. Thanks.

ProtonMail

@The_Deplorable

I agree, https://proton.me/mail is good, free, and seems pretty private.
654   Patrick   2025 Oct 22, 10:25am

657   Patrick   2025 Oct 23, 6:26pm

I did it, but into https://patrick.net/post/1304507/2017-03-30-feminism-update because that's the oldest one.

Otherwise, you get the weird situation that comments on a thread appear before the thread itself. Also, I look for that particular thread a lot myself.
658   The_Deplorable   2025 Oct 27, 9:50pm

@Patrick

I am having a problem with my email and for right now I need to turn off notifications.

Thanks.

@The_Deplorable

Go to https://patrick.net/edit_profile and uncheck the box next to:

"Get emails of comments which have '@The_Deplorable' and get emails of 'likes' of your comments"

Ok. Patrick

Another thread amalgamation suggestion. This time it's on Demographics.

I propose this be the One Thread That Rules Them All: https://patrick.net/post/1346755/2022-07-22-demographics-thread

And these two be inserted in with entries cross-sorted by timestamp, then deleted:

https://patrick.net/post/1289455/2016-02-24-it-s-still-the-demography-stupid by indigenous

And https://patrick.net/post/1381782/2024-08-01-asia-is-struggling-with-declining by Ohomen171

unless those authors object?

Missed one: https://patrick.net/post/1289455/2016-02-24-it-s-still-the-demography-stupid

Are you no longer deleting them?

Probably missed those two somehow because they were at the end.

Now I'm starting to doubt it's a good idea to merge all threads on a topic, because they have different angles. The truly redundant ones, sure.

I try to post things in previously created threads. Then I find multiple ones and don't know which to pick. This is why I came up with the amalgamation idea.
664   Patrick   2025 Oct 31, 9:42am

It's a good idea for essentially duplicate threads.
665   WookieMan   2025 Oct 31, 6:56pm

I just ignore the duplicate threads. Not changing topics, but the covid ones got out of hand so I ignored them. We all know it was bad. We're already 5 years removed from the start. Epstein started 20 years ago. We can only beat a dead horse so much on some topics.

I agree with the merging and I don't agree with censoring, but so many topics don't need 15 threads. Between a rock and a hard place on it. I choose to ignore the repetitive ones or ones I don't want to view.

Not going to talk about anyone directly. Because it's multiple users. Some of you cats beat a dead horse over and over and over. No one cares. If they did they'd address you and you'd just go back to the original bull shit you spewed out. Some of you are clearly not open to dialog even with actual proof you're wrong. It's extremely hard to have a conversation with some of you. No one here knows everything. Stop acting like you do. Grow up toddlers.

"Outrageous Claim"
Information showing Outrageous Claim is BS or at best, a conjecture, but some 'facts' were not. They were simply accepted from a conjecture that was repeated so many times (see "Mosaddegh Coup" claims which are a flaming bucket of half truths and lies, leaving out his family was nobility that lost the throne to the Pahlavis, he violated the Constitution by refusing to seat Liberals and Pahlavi Royalist MPs duly elected by the dozens, and used Shi'a Militants - the forerunners of the IRGC - to beat up his rivals and intimidate voters. The Shah was within his rights in the Limited Monarchy powers in the Constitution to can his ass like Oscar the Grouch, all Kermit Roosevelt did was provide leaflets and radio waves to offset Mossadegh's control of half the print media in Iran).
Two weeks later: "Repated debunked outrageous claim"
If you perservered using Autstic like powers of break down parts of claims one-by-one?
"I guess. I don't know"
A month later: "Repeat Outrageous Claim"

A certain user was INFAMOUS for this shit.
667   Patrick   2025 Nov 11, 4:08pm

I added an email alert which goes out to you when you log in, because at least one user said he thought someone else had logged in as him.

So that gives you:

1. the knowledge that someone logged in as you, and when
2. the opportunity to change your password right away if it wasn't you (which will kick the other user out right away)
3. the opportunity to let me know

Downside is that you'll get an email each time you log in.

New feature: on the home page and other pages with tabs:

active
new
views
unread

You can now type ^u (control-u) to open the next unread comment on the threads listed on that page, in a new tab.

Combined with closing the tab via the keyboard (command-w on a Mac), this makes it very fast to see what's going on without even touching the mouse.

Before, you had to actually click the "unread" tab to open the next unread comment.
