If the police want to play pretend soldier, they should be drafted and their asses sent to Afghanistan. Let them fight in a real war where they can be killed and let's see if those cowards still want to play soldier.

The programs to deliver excessed equipment to local LE have been around since the 1970s, largely as a scheme to dump crap on local taxpayers that will need lots and lots of spare parts to keep working and provide a secondary revenue stream to defense contractors.

If the Oliver show wanted to inspire outrage they'd look into the cost of maintaining this crap. Kits for maintaining guns are just pricey nuts for guns no one will ever use. Parts for APCs and other crazy shit the cops can now get their hands on 'for free' are just beyond imagining, astronomical compared to the bandwidth of normal local LE budgets. Likely, a lot of local LE end up moth-balling these kinds of toys after a town or city manager actually sees the bills for the parts and show up waving the invoice at town meeting, or runs memos when the town meeting warrants are issued.

I used to think government was a necessary evil, but I’ve changed my mind. It isn’t necessary.

That's an absolutely freaking awesome video by John Oliver.

The 1033 program, which is giving military hardware to the police, was 1997. What exactly was obama watching in 1997. Must be interesting living a life totally devoid of intellect, reason, or reality.

Not sure interesting is the word I’d use. Liberals, gays and trans people ruined everything

What did Obama do in his 8 years about this? Do remind us all about actions of the media darling...

WTF, man? Nobody was blaming Trump for this. And then you had to start a controversy where none existed. Are you fucking retarded?

An awful lot of cops either served in combat and/or are in the reserves.

But hey, let’s not let provable facts get in the way of a false “documentary” or a boring Dan rant.

That's a problem. One should not hire people with military background to be police. Military are used to flattening cities, calling in airstrikes and shooting people on sight. That is not the right background or mentality for being a police officers.

You said it happened under Obama's watch, not that Obama didn't do anything about it. Which is it?

How is this a provable fact when no one collects this information?

Americans are so dead and degraded now that if the US Army liquidates Fargo tomorrow, no one would even shrug.

It can be if academy training amounts to instilling fear into the officer that he is a battlefield surrounded by hostile agents - which is a relatively new phenomenon. Academy training 30 years ago spent as much time on the role and limits of a law enforcement officer in a constitutional democracy as other subjects.

In the 1960s and 1970s in the states you had real unrest, large protests and riots and violent crime was at all time highs. In all of that use of armed force against civilians was rarely employed though a good deal of the cops on the beat and sheriffs were combat veterans.

A cop back then would have been far more likely to laugh at a sorry fool like some of those people who've been shot and recorded on YouTube videos. First, they knew the difference between sorry fuck and mortal threat. Second, their training included a fair dose of instruction and caution on the limits of their ability to use force to express the state's monopoly on force in the preservation of the peace and rule of law.

The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations.
