SHILLER SAID TODAY "Well, I think bubble behavior is here to stay. So, showing a plot of [inflation-adjusted price] data is helpful, but most people will not be deterred by it."
Starting about 28:18 here
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4l-3uRgP5nQ

And he was quoted 11/18/2013
“It amazes me how people are often more willing to act based on little or no data than to use data that is a challenge to assemble.”

I bet a lot of people will respond to this call for a boycott by saying, "Psssht!"

The San Francisco Bay Area has high prices as it is the home of many high paid tech workers. A couple of programmers can bring in anywhere from $180,000 to $250,000 per year. Long distance commuting is a bitch and these people with RECENT skills are in demand.

That is what drives prices so high. Jobs and employment possibilities have always driven real estate.

I moved South as it makes no sense to be retired and live in high housing cost NorCal as there are many high tech workers who can pay these prices.

Someone who doesn't drink is considered being "Conservative".

Otherwise they would partake in a "Liberal" dose of hootch.

Drinking too much is considered being too Liberal.

Not that I disagree with the conclusion, but that chart is stupid. The correlation between political ideology and alcohol consumption should be done at least at the voting district level if not a finer granularity. Doing it at the state level is just crude.

Also, the research should have classified what kind of alcohol consumption is associated with each sample: beer, wine, liquor, etc.

Really, can't anyone in the press do real research anymore? Just look at how marketing companies data mine. When money is on the line, people get a lot more specific with their statistics.

Ah, yet another illustration of conservatives' ineptitude in reasoning.

1. Group A and group B are both composed of N people, where N is high enough to be used in a simple random sample.
2. Group A drinks more alcohol than group B.

Based on these facts, can we conclude either
3. More people in group A get drunk than people in group B.
4. The total number of drunk person-hours in group A is greater than in group B.

Anyone who isn't completely inept at logic realizes the answer is obviously no to both conclusions. Group A can easily drink more alcohol than group B, but pace themselves so that they get drunk less often (even never) than group B.

There is simply insufficient information to conclude that liberals get drunk more than conservatives based on the premise that liberals drink more than conservatives. And that is assuming the persons carrying out the study even got the definition of liberal correct, and that's a big assumption.

Sufficient data mining could filter for that and determine if political ideology independent of religious doctrine affects alcohol consumption.

Recent news was that a serial killer did the Simpson murders. OJ sent the guy in there to get some things for him, tho, but didn't intend the killing. So he was innocent. Sort of.
OJ wanting his stuff was a recurring theme, culminating in the Vegas episode that landed him in prison for real.

I draw far different conclusions from the provided graph. Only 6 data points represent low-drinking less-liberal states, and the highest consumption numbers are less-liberal as well.

The 6 low consumption conservative states are probably bible belt states with blue laws still in effect, and the graph does not reflect undocumented moonshine anyway.

Dan contends that the GOP is the home of racism

To be fair, back before the 1950s, the Democrats -- more specifically, the Southern Democrats or Dixiecrats -- where the party of racism. But when the GOP adopted The Southern Strategy they became the party of racism.

The GOP made a careful calculation based on racial demographics and concluded they would never have to win the minority vote to hold Congress and the presidency. That was true for the 1950s to the 1980s, but isn't true today. Hence, the Southern Strategy, as vile as it is, helped the GOP for a few decades, but now is ensuring its decline.

And no amount of Jim Crowing the elections by
- voter ID laws
- selectively arresting minorities for drug-related crimes
- gerrymandering the electoral districts
is going to compensate for the sheer number of "minority" voters. Ultimately, the GOP started digging its own grave when it adopted the Southern Strategy.

Furthermore, the gerrymandering of districts also backfired on the GOP. They managed to ensure that all the inbred radicals were in the same voting district so that only Republicans would be elected, but that very gerrymandering means that only extreme Tea-Party nutcases are elected now, and those nutcases can't win a general election.

Conservatives are responsible for the creation of every single problem they bitch about. The hate that blacks are all over America, but they are the ones who brought over the slaves. They hate that blacks are on welfare, but they are the ones who made sure that African Americans were kept out of good schools and jobs through segregation. They hate that blacks have a different culture than conservatives have, but the conservatives would not let the African Americans integrate into white society. Conservatives hate unemployment benefits and food stamps, but they outsource all the jobs to Chindia and do everything to break worker's bargaining power so that the Middle Class no longer has living wages.

The fact is that everything conservatives bitch about would go away if conservatives had no say in government or business.

Nice... The first part to recovery is admitting that you have a problem!!!

I'm not a Democrat. The Democratic Party is corrupt, lazy, incompetent, and greedy. However, the Republican Party is several orders of magnitude more evil than the Democratic Party.

Choosing between the two is like choosing between a guy who robs liquor stores and a guy who rapes and kills children. Yes, both are unacceptably bad, but when forced to choose between the lesser of the two evils, it is easy to decide.

I guess you missed the memo where it was decided that both men were innocent.

Everyone knows that the jury in both cases made the wrong call. Everyone knows that there are some people in each race that's OK with the wrong call that favors their race. And then there are people like me who would rather justice had been served in both cases.

Every response to my statement by the pro-Zimmerman crowd supports my statement, Zimmerman is the white man's O.J. A lot of white people feel that Zimmerman getting away with killing a black boy makes up for O.J. getting away with killing a white woman. Thankfully, there are more white people who don't believe in that nonsense.

Hardly. Although the jury made that decision, a different jury might not have. I've read Florida's Stand Your Ground law. There is nothing in it that implies a person has the right to chase down another person and then kill him. It's Stand Your Ground not Take Ground.

Hmmmm... why are the liberals here so concerned with this study???

Who says I'm concerned? That's you jumping to a conclusion.

There is nothing wrong with drinking alcohol. So whether or not liberals do so, although maybe interesting from a sociological view, is completely irrelevant to judgments of intelligence, integrity, morality, or correctness of political philosophy.

I did make suggestions of how the study could be made better, but those suggestions have nothing to do with the conclusion of the study.

Now, perhaps you posted this thread to suggest that liberals are somehow inferior to the assholes who call themselves social conservatives, but if that's the case you are way off base. Social conservatives have sided with evil on every issue for the past 400 years including
- slavery
- subjugating women
- segregation
- killing unarmed college students at anti-war protests
- torturing men, women, and children
- assassinating U.S. citizens including minors
- falsely imprisoning minorities to prevent them from voting
- Jim Crow Laws
- Voter ID laws who sole intention is to prevent legitimate minority voters from voting

Social conservatives are morally inferior, intellectually inferior, and despicable. This is true because of the horrific history of social conservatives. Whether or not they drink more is utterly irrelevant. Drinking isn't evil. Even getting drunk isn't evil. Raping your slave and then killing her children is fucking evil. Conservatives come from a very long line of evil, vile, despicable people. Evil is in their genes and their culture.

42070   Shaman   2014 Jan 31, 6:44am

I rebut Dan's argument with solid facts and he responds with hand-waving "Everyone knows..."
The difference between Truth and what "everyone knows" is evident to anyone with a modicum of wisdom. If you ever find yourself in the majority, you can be certain you're heading off a cliff.
