Then why do the police need body armor and tanks?

It's easier to kill with guns and tanks, then it is to kill with spears and swords.

You have to go to the source.

The most significant discovery was a collection of biographical sketches that listed hometowns and other details for more than 700 fighters brought into Iraq since August 2006.
...
Saudis accounted for the largest number of fighters listed on the records by far — 305, or 41 percent — American intelligence officers found as they combed through documents and computers in the weeks after the raid. The data show that despite increased efforts by Saudi Arabia to clamp down on would-be terrorists since Sept. 11, 2001, when 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi, some Saudi fighters are still getting through.

Oh, and where is ISIS in Iraq getting their weapons and training from?

The US, via their comrades, the Syrian Wahabi Fundamentalist Rebels just over the border. Syrian rebels are taken to Qatar and Turkey, given weaponry and trained. They then return to Syria, then go to Iraq and help out allied organizations there, with their US provided equipment and training.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/foreign-affairs-defense/syria-arming-the-rebels/syrian-rebels-describe-u-s-backed-training-in-qatar/

We also trained all kinds of Iraqis during the Occupation. Many would stay for the training, pocket the enlistment bounty, then not show up for the first day of military duty and instead join their respective Militias - Shi'a, Kurdish --- or Sunni Radical.

It's really hard to try to overthrow one government, and preserve another next door, when your allies in the first case are the same as your enemies in the second, sharing the same ideology.

Being an empire is a bitch.

You conservatives would make fewer mistakes if you gave less weight to appeals to authority and more weight to the actual evidence. A degree does not make a person right. Volumes of evidence does.

It is painfully obvious that you are not addressing the actual evidence provided in the Ted Talk. These clearly shows that you have no case to refute the presentation.

Here's the difference, at least I post threads for discussion, so far a total of 665, so you would expect to get different points of view from readers, plus over 85% more comments than you...

On the other hand, you've been able to breach the top 5 in Ignores with only ONE started thread...

That has to be a record!!!

You post other people's thoughts without comment, pretend they aren't your views when others rip them apart, or are invariably incapable of rationally supporting the points when you do attempt to support them, and when backed into a corner trot out your usual set of tired insults. You are a boring and predictable troll without a novel thought in your head. A childish troll at that.

And you are proud you have started 665 threads and have made substantially more posts in a shorter period of time than someone who is living in Kuwait and has an inordinate amount of free time on their hands and little to do with it? Congratulations! You must be even sadder than I take you to be, which is saying something.

Small biz owners and bums on welfare are both parts of the problem as far as I am concerned. The ideal situation is where employment is driven by large multinational corps and government sector for the small biz owners don't have economy of scale to pay decent salaries and some "sole proprietors" don't really like paying decent compensation to employees so to count on them to drive well paid society is wishful thinking. At the same time people who think it's OK to simply sit on ass all life and play video games need to be dealt with as well.

"Then why do the police need body armor and tanks?"

If I was a cop, I'd want body armour and wouldn't understand why anyone would deny me that. Tanks are a bit much. I'd want to be able to get my hands on an assault rifle because everyone else gets them too. What cop wouldn't want to be at least as well equipped as the criminals and general public?

Then you are the exception. Most republicans have blacktracked on issues as soon as Obama has embraced them. Just look at Maher's examples or Syria. All republicans were gun ho to go to war until Obama suggested the U.S. would intervene. Then all of a sudden, they said war was a terrible idea and we needed a diplomatic solution. Then when Obama got one -- albeit from Biden's goof that the president of Syria could turn over all his chemical weapons -- they objected to diplomatic solutions!

By the way, that Biden goof did more to make the world safe than all of Bush's and Obama's anti-liberty, er, anti-terrorism policies.

"They have MRAPs???"

I tracked down the original article. The military is giving over outdated equipment to law enforcement. Clearly this is just an environmental program, you know Reuse.

Seriously though, MRAPs themselves are pretty much defensive unlike a tank or AFV. In high risk areas it might be justified, although I'm betting many police forces will get rid of them due to maintenance costs and lack of use. The most likely use for MRAPs by police is during G8 summits and such where there might actually be IEDs.

NVGs seem fair enough. Anyone can get them. I'm assuming the aircraft are just regular stuff, like the light planes that are used for spotting pot fields in rural areas or helicopters to provide overwatch during car chases (no gunships.)

Machine guns (which probably means assault rifles and submachine guns instead of actual machine guns) are another issue. If patrolmen start carrying 'machine guns' as a matter of course, then there is a problem. Having them available, in today's current era of 'less violence than ever in history,' is fair enough.

As an aside, I'm betting no police forces have actual tanks. Tanks have heavy armour, tracked mobility and an offensive anti-armour cannon.

I'm curious just what in your limited demented world was the way it was actually phrased that you felt it needed embellishing with "Stoning".

If anyone on in Washington is capable of going all "floor kisser" on us, and stoning someone to death for not sharing their views. Would be the Kenyan Terrorist and his Taliban cohort Nancy "Li-li-li-li-li-li" Pelosi.

47258   Howdy There   2014 Jun 13, 8:57am

FortWayne, hadn't heard of that one. Definitely a tragedy, and the lack of police remorse reported is astounding. They should have been begging forgiveness for their error and offering every bit of support they could. They were probably advised against doing so for legal reasons (whole other thread right there.)

Had they stormed the correct house, the flashbang grenade used as a diversionary device could have saved a police officer's life. This case is evidence that when weapons are used in error there can be devastating effects, but not that the weapons are inappropriate when used properly.

Let's extend this logic. If you take this case as evidence that police should be less militarized because things can go wrong, what does that mean for the general population? Should we consider some form of ban on privately held weapons because they can be misused? Nancy Lanza didn't intend for her firearms to be used the way there were any more than the police intended to cause the harm they did with baby Bou Bou.

Well, in comparison to let's say the 20th century with WWI, the Red-White Russian Civil War (plus Spain), WWII (plus genocide), the Cold War (which includes Korea, Vietnam, etc), and all of the Stalin/Mao/Pol Pot purges, that's already circa ~200M dead persons in a world with half of today's population.

But realize, the century's young, so we still have another 86 years to catch up with the last one.

Well we are just a few short weeks from the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.

That's June 28th, mark your calenders!

Up to that point the 20th century had been relatively calm too. That one assassination triggered WWI, the Red-White Russian Civil War (plus Spain), WWII (plus genocide), the Cold War (which includes Korea, Vietnam, etc), and probably all of the Stalin/Mao/Pol Pot purges

(famous picture from the Munich Odeonplatz taken on August 2 1914 . The photo shows the announcement of Germany's entry into the war to a cheering crowd.)

The work world sucks. The only meaningful world is that of those who only work on their own activities.
