The Ebola crisis has evolved into a complex emergency, with significant political, social, economic, humanitarian and security dimensions.  The suffering and spillover effects in the region and beyond demand the attention of the entire world.

Taken out of context I see...

Yeah, I had that whole star crunch skin-thing going on, too. Make you up a liniment of chimney soot mixed with bacon fat -- slather it on. Gone.

I really think this is just a case of media sensationalization. No big deal, gang.

Next up -- Bovine Spongiform and how to cure that overnight with paint thinner and buttermilk

If we are doomed, then no need for affairs to be in order.
they'll be no one around to appreciate it.

You're right we are doomed, time to get the affairs in order.

depends on the temperature of the air.
each drop would evaporate given sufficient heat in a minute.
and would escape through the roof.
you didn't say "air tight"...

indigenous says

To make things more interesting, imagine the stadium is completely water-tight.

The question is, if a drop of water is added to the stadium and then one minute later it doubles in size to two drops, and then one minute after that it doubles again to 4 drops, and so on.. doubling in size every minute, how much time do you have to leave your seat and get out of the stadium before the water reaches your seat at the very top?

Think about it for a moment. Is it hours, days, weeks, months?

Doesn't change the point, a lot of people could be infected in short order.

then "we" are not doomed.

maybe we could send the libtards to ebolaville to test the "marijuana as a vaccine" hypothesis.

You shouldn't give us math questions this late at night!

My apologies. I get caught up on the vocabulary sometimes. Not being a math major, I thought I'd ask... With all the techies on this site, I figured someone would know more about this than I do.

Depends what you are looking at.

The death toll will model a sigmoid while the infected population will peak, then crash.

Both exponential and geometric growth curves continue to infinity which obviously cannot happen here.

It is exponential, the variable is not discrete. IOW be afraid be very afraid

Right wingers tend to be motivated by fear more than anything else, and this is going to be a very huge story by November

A tour of the conservative quote book:

1950s: "Communism is scary. We need to give up our rights to fight it."

1980s: "AIDS is scary. Isn't it time we gave up all our civil rights?"

2001: "Scary Muslims are scary - time to get rid of the Bill of Rights!"

2014: "Ebola!? The Constitution is not a suicide pact!"

All the time: "I am the only Constitutional person in America. The rest of you are a disappointment to the Founding Fathers. I'm really a libertarian because both parties are the same. People who give up liberty for safety deserve neither liberty nor safety!

"You people have no balls - no guts. Now if anyone wants me, I'll be hiding under my coffee table with my AR-15, wetting myself in fear of the coming Iranian attack."

56   Ceffer   2014 Sep 20, 3:54pm

When it comes to diseases, geometric is bad enough. Exponential means the entire galaxy will have Ebola soon.

Gatlings and flame throwers will keep the progression linear.

We should really ban flights from Africa. They never bring anything good here.

We should, don't really care that others think it is paranoia. There is almost nothing good that can come during this epidemic from Africa via open air travel. IMO, shut it down now!

WHO: 21,000 Ebola cases by November if no changes

LONDON (AP) — New estimates from the World Health Organization warn the number of Ebola cases could hit 21,000 in six weeks unless efforts to curb the outbreak are ramped up.

60   Heraclitusstudent   2014 Sep 22, 2:52pm

My guess would be ebola will reach a few hundreds thousands deaths a yr, after which it will sort of stabilize because sanitary quarantines will be enforced with machine guns.

This means no one here will notice, except a few unlucky people whose neighbors in a plane will start puking blood on them.

It will likely go on for a few years.

61   indigenous   2014 Sep 22, 3:29pm

Sounds optimistic, this is an exponential situation, governments don't react until it is too late.

62   Heraclitusstudent   2014 Sep 22, 3:41pm

It's exponential at the beginning until it runs into limits. In this case some regions will be too sparse, some will take effective measures, some people will flee etc...

It cannot stay exponential or we would all die which is preposterous.

63   indigenous   2014 Sep 22, 3:54pm

I know things tend to go to the negative when talking about disasters.

However the Spanish Flu infected 500 million people and killed between 50 and 100 million. The mortality rate was 10 to 20% with this it is 50%. There is no treatment for this, so technology will not help in fact it will make it worse by spreading it.

I hope your take is what happens.

The flu is more contagious.

Tens of thousand die of the flu in the US each year and we rarely hear about it.

Ebola is not airborne, contact with fluids is the vector. The growth rate in the current areas, is due to a set of factors unlikely outside Africa.

Exponential has nothing to do with how contagious it is.

Let's say it doubles every century: that's still an exponential.
