A third of Californians support Calexit and withdrawing from the union. The other two thirds are American citizens.

Wow, I never thought ANYBODY remembered Brian Auger and Oblivion Express. That's my favorite band name. Have 6 LPs.

"Bumpin' on Sunset" is another good one.

Are you kidding? All this would be recreated in an instant by the bureaucrats in Sacramento. With new found depth in zeal and assholeness.

If we're being even remotely serious, then we need to examine what happened the last time states tried to secede. If California was able to fight off the feds and win our states independence, I don't think any fed cronies would be left in Sactown. And if any were stupid enough to stick around, they would quickly find that the type of people capable of fighting for freedom also love defenestration.

Now we have a servant of the people.

I see only a servant of his own ego, trying to play a game he knows nothing about.

Our allies are distancing themselves. Russia and China are delighted to fill that void. Watch for stories on country relationships to come in the next months. It's about to get ugly. "America first" is the position of a toddler with no patience, sense of community, or manners.

Not accurate ones. It's still always only a guestimate.

It happens to be the same guesstimate used at all recent inaugurations ... along with subway ridership and other ancillary measures ... we know turnout wasn't bigly.

Meanwhile, park services twitter accounts (now two of them) have had tweets scrubbed off them for climate science facts and crowd size facts.

As Teddy Roosevelt said:
"Free speech, exercised both individually and through a free press, is a necessity in any country where the people are free." 5/7/1918

They definitely do not. But it stands to reason that if California has enough freedom minded citizens to win state independence, they have more than enough to throw a few parasites off the capitol dome.

Bush wrote a budget that expanded the size of the federal government on day one? I never knew that. Learning more and more on this thread. Any idea why he did not use it until year 7?

You do realize that the states created the Federal government? Not the other way around.

States have the right to nullify the Fed policies as with marijuana usage.

If the states have these rights by extension they would have to have the right to secede as the framers intended.

I encourage you all to look at what the Dow has done since Nov 8th. I had to look twice because I couldn't believe it surged that high.

Now doesn't history show that when these big milestones are reached, they continue higher in the short term?

Ecotopia, bring it on!

..."a 1970s cult novel, originally self-published by its author, Ernest Callenbach, that has seeped into the American groundwater without becoming well known...

The novel, now being rediscovered, speaks to our ecological present: in the flush of a financial crisis, the Pacific Northwest secedes from the United States, and its citizens establish a sustainable economy, a cross between Scandinavian socialism and Northern California back-to-the-landism, with the custom — years before the environmental writer Michael Pollan began his campaign — to eat local.

White bicycles sit in public places, to be borrowed at will. A creek runs down Market Street in San Francisco. Strange receptacles called “recycle bins” sit on trains, along with “hanging ferns and small plants.” A female president, more Hillary Clinton than Sarah Palin, rules this nation, from Northern California up through Oregon and Washington...."

Duh. I also realize that it's not up to ONE state to change the borders of the USA. We have a Constitution and legal procedure for such changes. Want to secede - jump through legal hoops. Want to change the procedure - jump through legal hoops. Don't want to do either - try to win a civil war (good luck with that).

I've always been in favor of secession. No more IRS, DEA, FBI, or any of the other three letter asshole agencies. No more federal funding to support our massive welfare state(goodbye welfare babies). No more federal schools, no more standardized testing.

We have wine, weed, tons of farmland, craft beer, silicon valley, porn, movies, and TV. We'll be debt free overnight, self sufficient in years, and charge everyone UP THE ASS for our exports. Wanna get high, drunk, or beat one out? Not without a 75% SURCHARGE!!!

Sure you are. So what is your plan for military protection? Contract with the United States Army, Navy, Marines, National Guard, Coast Guard, and Border Patrol?

California is lucky to have Jerry Brown in office

Jerry was instrumental in letting unions into the public sector and they are the main driver of California's pension crisis that is causing our cities to go bankrupt and giving us the worst rated infrastructure and schools.

The pension crisis facing California is going to dwarf the housing bubble - IMO. Here is hoping that the State Supreme court breaks the "California Rule" this year. It is the only way we have a prayer of digging out.

Granted, Jerry now looks halfway sane compared to the extreme left wing nuts that dominate the State legislature. But that is not saying much.

Music like this and even Steely Dan is kind of so impossibly good in a way it helped to spawn the punk rock scene because the kids coming up didn't have shit they could do to make any kind of a splash by comparison.

I think that is very true. Young musicians simply had to go in a different direction, and punk was it. Or they could have done like Dire Straits, and gone back to some incredible basics. But that took enormous skill, too.
