So what? Even in China with the massive spike numbers are falling now. It may very well become a seasonal occurrence, but this whole drama around it is utter bullshit. What's real is the supply chain disruption. 60 people total were diagnosed so far of which only 15 originated in the US - a country of 330 million people. There will be a slight spike followed by a drop-off to seasonal re-occurrence. Meanwhile heart diseases and cancer and car accidents and the flu - currently at its peak - kill millions and nobody cares.

This year's influenza has already killed over 15000 people in the US alone - get outta here ;)

The number of available beds at hospitals is remarkably low, as most beds are in use for other ailments. Even a modest increase in the number of patients means that, yes, just like in China, you'll get a cot at a local high school gym.

I heard that infants have been pretty resilient against virus. Wondering in the case of China the 2% mortality has more to do with a comorbidity of age, smoking, respiratory issues, and overall health. Hopefully this virus is more like normal flu for healthy people.

You're gathering 90% of the data from the Chinese though. So admittedly numbers could be worse, but their health care is likely worse. They very much copy others medical fields/care and then half ass it like their knock off products that suck. You can't compare an apple to a watermelon. What are their death rates for typical influenza? If they're to be believed.....

If the US get 20k cases and the mortality rate is higher than 2%, then maybe, maybe I'd get concerned. Until then, ratings have dropped since impeachment is over, there's no compelling story with the democrats, the economy is doing fine, etc. There's really just nothing going on big story wise, so the media has taken something and gotten overhyped about it. It happens.

TV networks, media companies don't sell positive news and they need to sell something right now. This is a good story for them to run with. Every single real estate broker was telling you in 2006/07 that it was the best time to buy..... just like every time something like this happens the media makes it out to be a plague that is going to wipe out half the world. Believe what you want, but it's undoubtedly overhyped.

Until then, ratings have dropped since impeachment is over, there's no compelling story with the democrats

Yup. 70+ year old people die. I'd also guess most of them were within a year of death anyway due to other health reasons (cancer, smoking, etc.).

It's the fucking flu and it doesn't even seem to infect the little ones which is a positive and is rarely mentioned. Have a neighbor and friend that lost a 2 year old from influenza. She's a nurse. She's not at all concerned about this. People gotta stop freaking out. Be concerned about supply chain issues, but people dying a year earlier is of minimal concern and that's for only 2% of the population...

I have no comment on the heat wave in France as I don't recall much about it. I rather dislike my interactions with French people as they seem like pieces of shit though, so probably the reason I didn't look into it.

I used to hate the French also until I was stationed at Le Tube Air Base in southern France during the 1990s. The locals there were very friendly and were very nice to Americans, especially the older French. They remember who pushed the Germans out.

Maybe it's just the ones that travel in the Caribbean, Central America or Chicago? That's been my main interaction. No interest in traveling to Europe... ever.... but the wife feels different. We'll see.

There are ass hoe Americans as well, so I don't discount the entire French population. I'm just hesitant with my interactions of someone from France.

My daughter supposedly contracted swine flu when she was only a few weeks old. She recovered just fine in a couple days like it was any other sickness.

I don't know of a single person who's gotten any of these flu's, much less died from them. The only people who should be worried, should already be worried because they have compromised immune systems, and will die regardless. Eating garbage, not exercising or sleeping, and relying on miracle pills and injections, you had this coming...

Kids are usually very resilient. It's the elderly that get wiped out. The flu is serious. The CV will become serious if it can spread like the flu. China showed it can be contained so I don't expect infection numbers anywhere near the flu, just a tiny fraction thereof. At least with strong containment measures.

Nothing will stop a virus from spreading than making sure your border with a third world country with awful public health is wide open as possible.

Age, heart disease, diabetes and cancer are what they have determined so far to be risk factors for death. Not much different than the flu other than flu is also serious in the very young who don't appear to be at risk for death with the Covid-19 virus

This is more contagious than flu and more deadly than flu, and though flu kills a lot of people a large portion of the population has some protection from vaccines or resistance from previous infections. This dramatically slows down the spread. As far as can be determined there is no or very little resistance to the virus, though people can be a symptomatic or have very mild symptoms.

I think it highly unlikely it can be contained, I would guess it is far worse in China than is reported, the Chinese lie like dogs. To be truthful, particularly because of the asymptomatic population, it might be best to just let it go wild rather than try to contain it. Focus on treatment and isolation for the seriously at risk populations, and getting a vaccine and anti viral drug to treat it developed ASAP.

I was there then. It was really horrible, 106 degrees and extreme humidity. They had to bring in refrigerated trucks to hold the bodies because the morgues were full.

Most of the dead seemed to be elderly from bad neighborhoods who locked themselves in for safety, and had no air conditioning.

My wife and I went to a lot of movies and cafes just for the effective air conditioning there. Our own unit was shit.
