Where the fuck are they going to get healthcare workers if they close the schools? The workers will have to stay home and watch their kids!
109148   Shaman   2020 Mar 12, 11:02am

I’d like a test but fat chance of that happening! The CDC is going to have egg on its FACE for years over this!
The infection rate is probably several orders of magnitude larger than they’ve tested.

Better to have somebody who doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground at the helm than somebody who just lies.

How can you clear an effective Covid-19 perimeter with all these chicks clutching at your zipper?
109151   socal2   2020 Mar 12, 11:35am

Because the majority of the testing is now being done by public health labs in the States (as it should be).

Think you will need to find another topic to spaz out on IN ALL CAPS!!!

The reaction seems to be different regionally. I just went to the grocery store minutes ago. Pretty typical Thursday afternoon. Shelves fully stocked. No masks or any of that other rubbish. Plenty of TP. Maybe us midwesterners aren't as pussified as some of the coastal folks?

You can buy most of that at Trader Joes. It's more like Costco and Target the get frequented by the preppers.

It's the illusion that shit is being bought out. The god damn packages of TP at Costco fill the entire fucking cart. You can only store so much of a cheap product in the back room. You sell 10 of them and the shelf is empty in the snap of a finger. Perception is a mother fucker. It does make for some funny memes though.

Being dead serious here. If your kid can't stay home for 8-10 hours and not fuck things up at the age of 7, you're a bad parent (unless they're disabled of course). Sorry.

I feel for those with much younger kids though. There's really no good decision when you have a kid, a job, rent, etc...

I think the distribution of fatties and smokers is probably most relevant. US is probably fatter, but my guess is that Italy has a higher percentage of smokers, which makes a respiratory illness more dangerous to Italy.

Yes, you seem to be right about smoking in Italy:

Italy smoking rate for 2016 was 23.70%

https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/ITA/italy/smoking-rate-statistics

According to the CDC, as of 2015, a total of 15.1% of U.S. adults (16.7% of men and 13.6% of women) smoke

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prevalence_of_tobacco_use

In China, 59.5% of men smoke!

"The system right now as it exists of doing a much broader capability of determining what the penetrance is in society is, right now, isn't operational at all for us," Fauci (CDC) said.

"The truth is we've under-invested in the public health labs," Redfield (CDC) said. "There's not enough equipment, there's not enough people, there's not enough internal capacity, there's no search capacity."

Why does it depend so much on the CDC when so much of the healthcare infrastructure is private in the US?

Don't touch Carnival stock at this point. I probably wouldn't touch cruise stocks at this point at all.... like I did last week 😥. I'm gonna hold what I got as I'm long term, but I'd just do index funds. Not sexy, but this is why the average investor gets burned fishing for individual stocks. You're usually wrong or the last one to the party.

That's just the CDC - the real number is around 1000 per day as state labs started testing. And rising.

Schengen area was banned strictly because they do allow unrestricted visa free travel. Actually makes sense, but there will always be a way to cherry pick facts to put bad optics on Trump. Maybe that is why Trump is allowing that cruise ship to disembark in California, since Trump owns a golf course in that state.

They cancelled Houston rodeo yesterday. A YUUGE hit to local economy as this is non-stop, 2 week-spending bonanza, probably largest in Houston area. Rodeo contestants/vendors are royally pissed off.

Corona cruises should be quarantined in trump golf resorts, and every patient has to play golf for 8 hrs a day. That would be WINNING!

My wife is past president of a big organization and they're looking at cancelling their big conference in April here in IL. It's one of their biggest fund raising events for the org. Toyota just cancelled an event out in Hawaii. I'm at the point that you should just assume everything is cancelled for the next 2 weeks. Like everything.

BREAKING: Disneyland on hiatus until April:
"While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Disneyland Resort, after carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, beginning the morning of March 14 through the end of the month," the company said in a statement.

Commuting to work is so pleasant now! That's surely a sign of a lot of people "working" from home. I expect that, especially until people adjust, a bunch of software development deadlines are going to be missed.
