I will give them another week or two to get their shit together
My sister is a teacher in the northeast and she's blown away by how much time she has now. She said there is very little student feedback and that she'll teach her lessons, do parent teacher conferences (for those who actually care), and log off. By 11am she's done.
I have to teach my class online at university because of corona, and students (a) do not log in to listen (ca. 40% attend as opposed to 80-90% for in-person class), and (b) even ones who tune in and listen do not get more complex things as I do not get feedback which I have for in-person class (if they become too quiet or too noisy, I know they do not understand etc). Which once again shows that "online education" is a complete scam.
I suggested that our school cancel a few weeks of classes now and then simply stick these weeks back at end of semester. But that was denied because it would eat into SUMMER TUITION revenue, showing that schools nowadays are about PROFIT! and not learning and education. This is a clusterfuck of yuuge proportions.
And don't get me wrong. I appreciate what teachers do. It's not easy work. Summer is one thing with the kids, but this is a whole different thing.
I just feel like most non-government workers always get shit on during times like this and the gov. workers never share in the pain.
They won't get their shit together, which brings to a logical question - why the fuck we need all of these high-paid administrators if hey are helpless and stupid at time of crisis? Our University administrators act as if they have never taught a class - they suggest preposterous solutions that are not based in reality.
If there is any good to come out of all this Wuhan Virus crap, I hope that it exposes alot of the useless jobs, particularly in education with all of the administrators and diversity bullshit.

Color me pessimist, but the normal bureaucratic solution will be to move more classes online and have a few additional offices of Pandemic Coordinators that taxpayers will pay for. The only possibility would be local government reigning in schools, but then immediately they will be screamed at because if you cut a bureaucrat position at school, you definitely HATE CHILDREN!
Watch dropout rates skyrocket after kids are on this crap for half a year.
straight from the get go we should have switched summer vacation with current quarter.
I hope parents are doing their best teaching their children real life skills with this time, but the cynic in me bets most kids will be watching TV and playing video games
I feel like the kids teachers have just dumped their responsibility for teaching into the laps of parents (who have to work) and can just sit back and issue assignments without ever teaching the kids how to do the assignments. The parents have to teach them how to do the work, encourage them to do the work, Pre-grade/correct the work, and make sure submissions happen. The teacher just assigns and does final grading.
At least that is how it’s been working with my second grader. My fifth grader is much more independent and his teacher gives them work and feedback every day. And i have not idea how it’s going with my seventh grader. She doesn’t like to share about her classes

FUCKING NOW!!!!
What they do is much less than sites like khanacademy.org are doing and that site is fucking FREE.
Not sure if any of you are dealing with this yet. This remote learning shit with the kids is absolute bullshit. Our district is so ill prepared for this. Given modern tech, I would have thought they had a plan. I mean we're right in the zone for tornados, blizzards and yes even earthquakes here in IL.
A school could easily be down for months (well not blizzard, days for that) with these disasters. They didn't have a plan? WTF? What are we paying them for? I'm pretty pissed as a tax payer right now. Sick of government workers getting bailed out every time everyone else takes a hit. WE don't have a choice in paying taxes. It's bullshit.
My wife is officially going bonkers. 30 more days of this minimum.
It's a pain in the ass and another 3 hours out of your day, but your kids are going to be at an advantage to the rest of the population.

Kind of common sense? WTF are we paying administers 6 figure salaries and something as simple as a school shut down can't be handled and coordinated well?
WE don't have a choice in paying taxes.
I should at least get a break on my real estate taxes since my kids aren’t getting the benefit of a blue ribbon education.
But no, those are going up this year as well.
I know we're all in this Covid19 thing together but I agree that the fact that schools are not prepared to do distance learning makes me wonder why the people responsible (administrators) are paid so much.
The fact is the staff and teachers know the poor kids who are likely to not have internet.

Impossible: everyfuckingbody and their dog have Internet on their phones. And everybody has a phone now.
Pandemic CoordinatorsOnce this precedent is set, you can be sure that every year from now on, there is going to be a virus crisis. Coordinators have to have a justification for their existence.
The state and local coffers will soon run dry anyway.
It's happening!!!!
Governor is proposing 20% pay cuts for ‘most’ state employees
