We are blessed to have choices. So many others don't have choices.

Life is what you decide to make of it. Humans are the most adaptable creatures on the planet, able to survive from pole to pole and in almost any sort of environment Earth has to offer.

How about one of the island resort towns of North or South Carolina? Probably won't meet your humidity requirements, but the summers always have ocean cooling and breeze.

Santa Fe.

Chile can be damned cold and foggy; the entire Pacific Coast is alternately dry and foggy all the way up to Columbia/Panama, where it's steamy like a tropical hellworld and Florida in Summer is cool and dry in comparison. Most accidents on the Pan-American highway running west of the Andes happen in severe foggy conditions.


Lima Peru is ugly AF, foggy dirty desert.

And just like the US with the Rockies, East of Andes is humid as hell.

Cuenca is nice and cheap, I live in a Penthouse with 2-stories for $750. You can rent a hotel suite for $150/month. I said a month. But downtown, no cars. Downside: anything imported is expensive. They have lots of substitute goods, Los Andes is damn close to Heinz, but all 4 brands of Sriracha are made with Mexican peppers, not Thai style at all. Burns lightly on the tongue, rather than hot and tangy in the back of the tongue.

Yes, but they get you through property tax. The beautiful 1931 house where I lived in the garage apartment from 1967 to 1974 at 8122 Santa Clara Dr. in Dallas was sold to a younger couple in 1973 for $34K when it needed $10K in repairs the old couple who'd lived in it since 1940 could not afford. By 1970 it was $100K and today it's $800K. That $34K in 1973 is worth about $205K today so it's completely out of the range of the reservoir engineer I worked for at Lone Star Gas Co. and probably even the head of the Engineering Department. Taxes are probably $10K a year or more.

Property taxes are the low hanging fruit legislatures will be using to recover from the scamdemic. Even in CA (if the commercial repeal of prop-13 passes) I expect to see a longer term repeal of residential prop-13 but in the shorter run work around angles allowing them to indirectly tax your property as well.

It really depends on how you compare property taxes. That lot size and house square footage here in Sunnyvale would be "worth" $3MM, so figure $32k/year property taxes. If you bought 30 years ago at "only" $700k you'd be paying a mere $12k/year. If you wanted to buy a place here and only pay $12k/year taxes, you'd be getting a 2-bedroom condo that's 40 years old.

That's child's play in IL. $800K valued house in IL would run you close to $20k/yr in property taxes depending on location. I'd gladly purchase an $800k house in TX and pay no income taxes, but dish out $12k/yr for property taxes. I pay a little over $10k in income taxes in IL. Moving to TX would be a massive savings for most from IL for sure.

I got lucky and bought at the right time and my taxes are $3,300/yr after appealing. So not moving anytime soon. You know that look you get when you can tell someone is mentally giving you the middle finger? Yeah, that's what I get from my neighbors. I live in a small town and most houses sell for $200-$350k. Outside of seniors, I don't know a single person in town paying under $6k/yr. Some are at $10-12k/yr on a $350k value and size around 2,600SF.

IL will continue to lose population from higher income earners. Not that hard for us to get the same paying job elsewhere in the country either. Moving to a no income tax state alone would probably cover the moving costs in a year without having to pay income taxes. And now IL is trying to pass a constitutional amendment to allow for a graduated income tax. Marketing it as saying only those over $250k of income will be affected. It's bullshit. California reminds me of a guy I knew who ran a crappy professional services business tied in with union kickbacks and heavy advertising. The philosophy was that as long as the connections and heavy advertising kept people funneled in the front door faster than they complained and bailed out the back door, the business continued to make a profit.

Eventually, the business failed due to various lawsuits and fraud investigations. The model couldn't sustain when the inferior or unnecessary services were cynically tied to corrupt reimbursements.

That's what I think of when I conceptualize the working model of California governance. Keep cramming them in the front door faster than they flee and flip the bird leaving, and the abusive models can still make money for the crooks.

Yah Illinois is a double or even triple negative. High taxes and no great weather or beaches or any of the natural features of a California. We have really nice weather on the coast most of the year, not too hot and rarely humid, never all that cold and no snow. Plus high crime in Chicago and some other cities, and lefty government that never changes. I’ve lived there but as a student so it was different than as a taxpayer getting milked dry by the local government.

What they fail to mention is that eventually everyone will be making over $250K because of inflation, but that income will be worth only what $25K is today.

Yes, by default you'd have to have a decent income to qualify for a $600-700k home loan in almost any area with a decent down payment. Doesn't mean you should take it up the ass in property taxes though. For a property of that value, most states are at minimum 20% lower and most are half that. A high income isn't a right for the government to take your money.
