The White House is considering proposals from business and immigrant rights groups that are pressing President Obama to provide hundreds of thousands of green cards for high-tech workers and the relatives of U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

But Asians and Hispanics are natural republicans, right?

Hardworking, industrious, entrepreneurial---hate abortion and "the gays", but have framed Ronald Reagan next to framed Jesus.

Oboyimsodummer is falling into a trap! He thinks he's recruiting Demorats but he is increasing Republicans!

White America is so screwed and fortunate!

See above? Unless you think that minorities (even the good ones!) are actually natural Democratic constituencies.

It's a plot to replace the kind of minorities we don't want with the kind we do. A democrat plot. They'll move right into the poorer sections of town and compete for housing with welfare queens, forcing the undesirables out to the burbs or the countryside, thus leaving the valuable city-adjacent real estate free of crime-ridden elements again.

No that is clearly Obama's intention, he is not going to do it to get more R voters...

The simplest answer has always been there, but neither side wants to do it because this has always been about exploitation, not immigration.

The simplest answer is to increase the number of work visas and make everyone legal. Citizenship would be a possibility, but much later through the normal lengthy process. After a period of amnesty, those who do not sign up for a work visa would be deported with all due prejudice. At the same time, we would have every recourse to track people and make sure they operate under the law. It would be acceptable to have laws like Arizona did where one could freely ask for validation of citizen status because there would be no shame except for crooks, gang members and other ne'er do wells.

Why haven't they done this?

The Democrats are for immigration and citizenship because they want to create new voters who are wholly dependent on their welfare bureaucracies. Democrats don't want work visas because that means they wouldn't be able to vote.

The Republicans want to be against immigration because they don't want more Democrat voters; however, they do want cheap undocumented labor for their farms and factories. Having work visas means following labor laws.

Who wants work visas? I believe the "immigrants" themselves, because they are not immigrants who come to America for the Freedom. They are foreign nationals who want a paycheck and may even hope to return to their country of citizenship, with a healthy bank account full of US dollars.

The usual business need for more cheap labor. They dilute the work force every few years to keep working class from ever earning enough to compete.

This is a wet dream for any established business that wants cheap labor. When it comes over to screwing a working man, this government will never be late.

This is how they sold America the "offshoring". They told us that we don't have enough workers to do the jobs and this was needed. They just didn't want to tell us that many Americans will be thrown onto safety nets to be replaced by $1/hour cheap labor or by poor migrants who will work for food.

That is the standard trope, but not entirely accurate. I have read a quite a few articles by Victor Davis Hanson who talks about the down side of Reagan's amnesty.

The immigrants don't compete exactly with the indigenous. Not sure about the STEM workers. Anyway the idea is that through comparative advantage the entire economy grows because of the increase in trade.

UNLESS the government meddles like here in Calif where 1/3 of the welfare in the US goes to this state with 12% of the population.

I don't see a benefit for the working class. They just get to make less money, there really isn't an upside for them in this deal. This deal is for businesses seeking cheap labor, nothing more nothing less.

The upside is an expanding economy. Agree to disagree.

Consider that the economy grew when it absorbed the boomers into the market place, also consider that the economy grew when women came into the workplace, also consider that the economy grew when immigrants came into the workplace.

Also consider that if those immigrants did not come into the workplace those jobs would simply not get done. If Gates did get more immigrant workers on H1b visas he would simply offshore those jobs.

It is true that the states give too much welfare to immigrants but that is not an immigrant problem that is a government problem.

I wonder how much the economy in the US would have grown, if at all, if not for immigrant workers. The Google guys were children of immigrants, 40 Percent of Fortune 500 Companies were Founded by Immigrants or Their Children.

Get over it, immigration is a win win.
